Treating Back Pain & Injury with Herniated Disc Surgery
Southcoast Health offers many resources to the communities we serve, including a wide range of neurosurgical services. One of those is herniated disc surgery in Fall River, Dartmouth, Wareham, MA and the surrounding areas.
Also known as disc removal or a discectomy, herniated disc surgery involves the removal of part or all of a spinal or intervertebral disc. Spinal discs are important because they act as cushions for your spine and are located between each vertebra.
If you’re interested in learning how herniated disc surgery can help alleviate your back pain, find a doctor near you at the Southcoast Brain & Spine Center and set up a consultation. We also offer an educational Joint Seminar for our patients. Call 508-973-1102 to register and learn more.
Why We Perform Herniated Disc Surgery at Southcoast Health
You may be a good candidate for herniated disc surgery if you are experiencing the following symptoms:
- Back or leg pain, weakness or numbness
- You have problems walking and performing other daily tasks
- You are unable to control your bladder or bowels
- Nonsurgical treatments like physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications or injected steroids haven’t eased your pain within six weeks or longer
What to Expect
Herniated disc surgery can be a minimally invasive procedure with a small incision, or an open, more traditional procedure with a larger incision. Depending on the type of surgery, you may go home the same day or spend a few nights in the hospital.
After surgery, you may have to use a back brace to support your back while it heals. Your doctor will encourage you to walk soon after surgery, and will likely recommend occupational or physical therapy as part of your rehabilitation. Full recovery may take four to six weeks.
