ACL Surgery in MA & RI

Your anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, is one of the most important ligaments in your knee, so it can seriously hinder your activity levels when it is injured. Whether you have a partial or complete tear, you can find the treatment you need with ACL surgery in southeastern Massachusetts or Rhode Island at Southcoast Health.

What is ACL Surgery?

ACL surgery (also called ACL reconstruction, replacement or repair) repairs a torn ligament in the knee. This ligament helps support and secure your knee joint, making it an important piece to repair if damaged.

Do I Need ACL Surgery?

You may be a good candidate for surgery in Fall River, Dartmouth or New Bedford, MA if you have completely torn your ACL, or if you have other knee injuries along with a torn ACL.

Your orthopedic specialist at Southcoast may recommend surgery if:

  • You are an active adult.
  • You are an older child or teen, and your growth plates have closed.
  • You have symptoms of instability, including knee pain and a knee that gives way during daily activities.
  • Nonsurgical management, such as physical therapy and rehabilitation, hasn’t worked.

What to Expect from ACL Reconstruction

ACL reconstruction surgery is a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure that involves the use of a connective tissue graft (either synthetic, from elsewhere in your body, a cadaver or an animal) to repair your injured ligament. Your body will then be able to heal around the graft over several months.

ACL Surgery Recovery Time

Most people go home the day of their surgery, but you may have to use crutches and wear a brace to keep your knee stable while it heals. Physical therapy will be likely part of your recovery, and you can expect to gradually regain knee function, strength and stability over a recovery period of four to six months.
