Treating Irregular Heartbeat with Cryoablation in Southeastern MA

Cryoablation is a type of cardiac ablation — a procedure to treat irregular heartbeats due to atrial fibrillation or arrhythmias. It uses extreme cold to destroy the abnormal heart tissue causing the arrhythmia. This restores a normal heart rhythm. This is a newer technique of doing atrial fibrillation ablation vs. the traditional approach which is done with radiofrequency or “heat” energy. Cardiologists who specialize in electrophysiology at Southcoast Health perform this minimally invasive procedure using a catheter and X-ray guidance to view the heart and complete the treatment.

Recent studies have found Cryoablation to be significantly more effective than medication. Patients who do not have recurrence of AFIB after cryoablation may be able to stop some of their medications including anti-arrhythmic drugs and in some cases even blood thinners. Southcoast Health is proud to offer this advanced treatment locally to patients with AFib.

Reasons for Cryoablation

Doctors at Southcoast Health perform cryoablation to restore a normal heart rhythm. Your doctor may recommend cryoablation if:

  • Medicines haven’t worked
  • You had serious side effects from medicines
  • Your type of arrhythmia responds well to ablation
  • You are at high risk of complications from your arrhythmia

Recovery & What to Expect

Cryoablation takes only about two hours and you will typically stay one night in the hospital. You’ll need to take it easy for a few days after the procedure. Most people go back to work and normal activities within two to three days. Ask your doctor about returning to exercise and strenuous activities.

Keep your heart healthy with the following lifestyle habits:

  • Being physically active
  • Controlling your blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Eating a heart-healthy diet
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Quitting smoking
  • Reducing stress

Meet with a cardiologist who specializes in electrophysiology to find out if you qualify for this procedure or to learn about other options for treating an irregular heartbeat.

Southcoast Health offers cryoablation to patients in Fall River, New Bedford and Wareham, MA, as well as parts of Rhode Island.
