You did More Monday

“Be the reason someone smiles. Be the reason someone feels loved and believes in the goodness in people.” – Roy T Bennett

Psychologically, acts of kindness evoke feelings of gratitude, empathy and compassion. Take a moment to perform a random act of kindness for a patient or colleague and be the reason someone smiles today.

Try it Tuesday

“Sometimes it takes only one act of kindness and caring to change a person’s life.” – Jackie Chan

You could learn something new about a patient or a peer simply by listening. Today, try to really listen to those around you to help create meaningful, long-lasting relationships and nurture each other’s wellbeing.

All are welcome to join us for Taco Tuesday at the Charlton Memorial and St. Luke’s Hospital cafeterias and the Tobey Hospital ED Kiosk, featuring special deals to celebrate our Southcoast caregivers!

Stay a Step Ahead Wednesday

“Kindness is igniting a light in someone else for no reason other than to watch them enjoy the glow.”

We all have the opportunity to add value and make a positive difference. For today’s activity, think outside the box and find an impactful way to create a positive change in someone’s day.

Today is Southcoast Spirit Day! All are welcome and encouraged to wear their favorite Southcoast-branded gear and accessories – show us your Southcoast pride!

Thoughtful Thursday

“How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it.”– George Elliston

Recognizing and appreciating the efforts and contributions of each other is essential for building strong connections and fostering kindness. Take a moment to show someone you appreciate them by saying thank you or sending a message of gratitude.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”– Gandhi

Empowered to be Exceptional: The Power of Connecting

Southcoast Health Physical Therapist Karen Glenn demonstrated the value of connecting with a patient beyond their primary diagnosis.

During the course of treating her patient for suspected rotator cuff tendinitis and scapular pain, Karen began to question whether the patient’s symptoms, and their response to her treatment, suggested something more serious. She contacted the physician who had referred the patient with her concerns and suggested a cervical and/or spine workup.

This testing led to the detection of an advanced meningioma (a tumor that grows from the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord) and an adrenal mass, and the patient is now scheduled to have surgery to address the issue.

Karen’s clinical expertise, judgment and proactivity – as well as her ability to listen to and connect with her patient – all led to the eventual identification of the root of the problem. In this way, Karen was truly empowered to deliver exceptional care.

Empowered to be Exceptional: The Power of Being Thoughtful

A member of our Patient Experience and Service Excellence team was empowered to help connect a concerned family member with a patient at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Our Service Excellence ambassador received a call from the patient’s sister, who had no way of communicating with her brother because he was nonverbal. What’s more, she wasn’t able to visit him from her home in New Jersey. Understandably anxious about her brother’s wellbeing, she asked if there was any way Southcoast Health could connect her with him.

With compassion and empathy, our team member first tried securing an iPad to facilitate a video call. When that option didn’t work out, she came up with a new solution.

She asked the patient’s sister to install WhatsApp, the messaging and video calling app, on her phone. Our team member then went to the patient’s room and video called the sister using WhatsApp. The patient’s sister was so relieved to be able to see and speak to her brother, and our team member visited the patient every day until his discharge to connect him with his sister. Thanks to our colleague’s empowerment and resourcefulness, our patient was able to hear his sister’s healing words of love and encouragement every day during his stay.
