What inspired you to become a physician? Why did you choose your area of care?

Before I went to medical school, I was a biomedical engineer. I’ve always been interested in science, but I wanted to pursue a career where I could directly help people. I wanted to become a cardiologist since I started medical school because it combines my interest in science and clinical medicine.

Was there a particular moment when being a physician became ‘more than medicine’ for you?

All doctors have certain patients they will never forget. For me, it was a patient who had recently lost his health insurance and required advanced medical device therapy following an extensive heart attack. I was a part of a team of physicians that tirelessly petitioned insurance companies and the hospital institution to cover the cost of the patient‘s care. In the end, the patient received a heart transplant and is doing well now.

What is your personal philosophy of care?

Everyone deserves a healthy heart. I aim to provide the best care for everyone regardless of their education, ethnic background or socioeconomic status. I’m interested in serving everyone in the Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts region.

In your opinion, what things matter most to patients?

I think patients want a physician who carefully listens to their problems with empathy and respect. I strive to have my patients feel like they are the ultimate medical decision-maker and to have them feel that I am their equal partner in healthcare.

Why did you choose to be a Southcoast physician?

I chose Southcoast because I wanted to provide expert cardiac care to patients in their own community, without requiring them to travel to Boston. I also admired their ‘More than medicine’ values, which suggested to me that Southcoast isn’t just a business, but a group of physicians who care about their patients first and foremost.

What do you like to do in your personal time?

My favorite pastimes include watching baseball and hockey. I enjoy traveling with my wife, Zoe, especially to her hometown in Northern California. We also frequently visit my family in New Jersey, which includes my twin niece and nephew.

What is one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?

I am a first-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
