Sprains, Strains & Closed Fracture Care at Southcoast Health Urgent Care
A sprain is an injury to a ligament or joint capsule, which acts like a protective sleeve around a joint. A strain involves injury to a muscle, tendon or group of connected muscles and tendons. Both sprains and strains are soft tissue injuries.
A closed fracture is a bone injury that does not break the skin. This is different from an open fracture, which breaks the skin and requires emergency treatment, usually surgery.

Diagnosing Your Symptoms
Sprains, strains and closed fractures can have similar symptoms. Your urgent care provider may order an X-ray to confirm the diagnosis. Symptoms may include:
- Inability to bear weight
- Joint instability
- Limited range of motion
- Muscle cramping or spasms
- Muscle weakness
- Pain or tenderness
- Visible bruising
If you have a closed fracture, the area may appear deformed. You may also hear a snap or grinding noise when the injury occurs.
