About Theodore Schafer

Dr. Theodore Schafer is a graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, IL with a degree in Biology and Pre-Medicine. After college, Dr. Schafer joined the U.S. Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. While remaining on Active Duty, he completed his medical school at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Schafer completed both his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He then finished his fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, CA. He served in multiple leadership and clinical roles throughout the remainder of his Naval career, Including as a Department Chair and as Fellowship Program Director. Dr. Schafer spent 30 years active duty in the United States Navy and retired as Captain (O-6), Medical Corps, USN in 2015.

Dr. Schafer’s personal philosophy of care is rooted in educating patients about their condition and its management so that they can have the most successful healthcare possible. He has always been fascinated with science and biology which, combined with a desire to serve society, inspired him to become a physician.

Dr. Schafer’s clinical interests include Inflammatory Bowel Disease, colon cancer screening and biliary disease.

When not at work, Dr. Schafer enjoys reading and attending live music events.

  • The staff was excellent when I got to the waiting area. But the receptionist who was in Number 3 took my information and told me to go to waiting area 3 never checked me in. After waiting until 5 minutes after my appointment time,because I was told to come 15 before me actual appointment time. I went up to the window and asked if the Dr was running late. The lady informed me "no" and asked me my name. I told her. She asked if I checked in and I told her yes. I go there with my MOM to see another Dr so I know to check in before going to the waiting area. That's my only negative experience of my day. Where Dr Schafer is, the staff was very nice and caring to me.

  • my diagnoses for diverticulitis wasn't discussed by the Dr. I had to wait 5 months for a appointment.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and  Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office.  The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
