About Theodore Schafer MD
Dr. Theodore Schafer is a graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, IL with a degree in Biology and Pre-Medicine. After college, Dr. Schafer joined the U.S. Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. While remaining on Active Duty, he completed his medical school at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Schafer completed both his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He then finished his fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, CA. He served in multiple leadership and clinical roles throughout the remainder of his Naval career, Including as a Department Chair and as Fellowship Program Director. Dr. Schafer spent 30 years active duty in the United States Navy and retired as Captain (O-6), Medical Corps, USN in 2015.
Dr. Schafer’s personal philosophy of care is rooted in educating patients about their condition and its management so that they can have the most successful healthcare possible. He has always been fascinated with science and biology which, combined with a desire to serve society, inspired him to become a physician.
Dr. Schafer’s clinical interests include Inflammatory Bowel Disease, colon cancer screening and biliary disease.
When not at work, Dr. Schafer enjoys reading and attending live music events.

Dr. Schafer is an amazing doctor. Used to go to Hawthorne Medical and see Dr. Hoffman for years as my gastrologist had a problem. It was never solved. Want to go see Dr. Schafer and the problem was solved immediately. Sometimes you just need to change. And thank God I want to go see Dr. Schafer. He is an amazing gastrologist. I am so glad that I went to go see him. That's all everyone that has problems with their gastrologist to take a look into mine.

So far in my experience with South Coast, you are doing pretty much everything right, which, given the current state of health care, is a tremendous compliment. We need more gastroenterologists in this area. This provider is only available twice a month! It took me several months to get appointment.

Dr. Schaefer understood my problems and helped me to use bacloven when I need it , without fear of losing control. He also has an idea for a stimulant that will help my daily toilet routine. I'm waiting on my insurance approval.
