Expert Care for Cold, Sinus, or Ear Infections in MA & RI

During cold and flu season, kids are more susceptible to ear infections. Ear infections are most often seen in children due to the small anatomy of their eustachian tubes. Although infections can happen at any time, parents should be more alert for ear infections during the fall or winter when respiratory infections are on the rise. At Southcoast Health, our pediatricians provide expert care for colds and sinus or ear infections for those ages 18 and younger. For more information or to schedule an appointment with a physician, contact your nearest Southcoast Health hospital or primary care practice today.

Signs and Symptoms of an Ear Infection

When your child has an ear infection, it typically starts with a cold. Common symptoms include a cough, congestion, and a runny nose. If your child gets a fever shortly after the cold symptoms appear and it lasts for more than 48 hours, then it’s time to get their ears checked out. Excessive crying, as well as fussiness, poor feeding, and trouble sleeping could mean that your child is experiencing pain. The pain associated with ear infections usually gets worse at night and when lying down.

Treatment for Your Child’s Ear Infection

One of our highly skilled pediatricians at Southcoast Health will treat your child’s ear infection according to their age and the severity of the condition. After evaluating your child’s symptoms, we will create a personalized treatment plan to ensure the best possible outcome. If your child is under 6 months of age, an antibiotic will be prescribed.

Sinus Infections

A sinus infection is inflammation of the tissues surrounding the sinuses. Since the sinuses in the forehead do not start to develop until 9 to 12 years of age, young children are less likely than teenagers to get sinus infections. If your child is experiencing nasal drip with thick, yellow-green mucus, they likely have a sinus infection, not an ear infection or a cold. Other signs of a sinus infection may include:

  • Bad Breath
  • Cough or congestion
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Headache that gets worse
  • Pain in the face and upper teeth
  • Runny, stuffy nose for more than a week
  • Sinus pressure behind eyes and cheeks
  • Weakened sense of smell
