A Range of Treatment Options for Vascular Conditions

Dr. Richard Pin Shares Comprehensive Treatment Options for Vascular Conditions

Treatment of vascular conditions of the heart is essential to promoting positive health. From more mild conditions such as varicose veins to complex diseases related to the arteries, lymphatic system, veins, and more – Southcoast Health offers patient-focused care through various procedures and surgeries.

Dr. Richard Pin, Chief of Vascular Surgery, emphasizes the importance of vascular care and treatment options at Southcoast Health. “We offer comprehensive vascular care,” Dr. Pin says. “Our services provide southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island residents with personalized and minimally invasive treatment options.”

A Comprehensive Approach to Vascular Care

Caring for complex health conditions requires a comprehensive approach. At Southcoast Health, vascular care is no exception. With exceptional training, Southcoast’s cardiovascular doctors regularly collaborate to provide exceptional care.

“The vascular team has a close relationship with our vascular imaging lab and fellow cardiac physicians,” Dr. Pin says. “Our patients are followed through the course of their treatment. From their primary care physician (PCP) referral to imaging, to treatment with our vascular surgeons and other specialists, patients are a part of a continuum of care, close to home.”

Advanced Vascular Care Close to Home

Southcoast Health specializes in caring for those with aortic aneurysms, vascular diseases, stroke, hypertension, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, varicose veins, vascular-related syndromes, pulmonary embolism, and more. Most importantly, advanced vascular care is available to patients close to home.

“What sets us apart from nearby hospital systems is our ability to perform advanced [aortic] procedures,” Dr. Pin says. “For example, we offer Fenestrated Aortic Endograft (FEVAR). This procedure is a minimally-invasive option for people with abdominal aortic aneurysms who don’t qualify for traditional endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) due to having a complex aortic aneurysm.”

As a result, procedures like this are available due to Southcoast’s specially trained surgeons and access to medical devices. The medical devices are also anatomically customized to each patient – an option that is not common in nearby health care facilities.

The Vascular Quality Initiative

Similarly, progressive treatment of carotid stenosis for high-risk stroke patients (and those with assisting co-morbidities, e.g., high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, etc.) is a leading procedure at Southcoast Health.

“Patients in the South Coast region have direct access to this procedure because we are a part of a database collection system called The Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI),” Dr. Pin says. “Given that, we can offer a minimally invasive procedure called transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) – bypassing an alternative highly-invasive, open surgery for our patients.

Southcoast also provides advanced treatment to blood clots, e.g., deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolisms. Using advanced technology and medical devices, treatment of these conditions is made possible without having to do surgeries that require large incisions, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) medicines, or ICU hospital stays. Instead, patients will undergo a minimally invasive procedure that takes under two hours and may have the option to return home on the same day. Advancements in these technologies and treatments are at the center of Southcoast’s vascular care.

“Our mission is to reduce the risks associated with blood clot procedures,” Dr. Pin adds. “We make this possible by continually evolving our care to include the latest technologies in treatment.”

Southcoast Health offers multidisciplinary cardiovascular care with advanced services in aortic aneurysms, carotid stenosis, blood clot treatments, and the Vein Center. Consequently setting Southcoast Health apart from other health care systems in the South Coast region.

A Vein Center Devoted to Patient Comfort

In addition to the treatment of complex vascular conditions and diseases, Southcoast Health is focused on easing the discomfort of varicose veins, spider veins, and other venous diseases.

Southcoast Health offers a Vein Center, equipped with skilled vascular specialists that provide compassionate care for the treatment and management of venous diseases and varicose veins.

“When you visit our vein center, you’ll experience comprehensive care in a warm, spa-like atmosphere,” Dr. Pin says. “We focus on getting our patients back to enjoying life and feeling more confident both physically and mentally.”

For example, services available at the Vein Center include sclerotherapy, vein removal, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and endovenous laser treatment (EVLT).
