About Matthew Philips

Dr. Philips is a neurological surgeon in practice with Southcoast Neurosurgery. He is on the medical staff at St. Lukes Hospital in New Bedford, Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River and Tobey Hospital in Wareham.

A native of New Bedford, Dr. Philips is a graduate of Yale University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania and subspecialty fellowship training in complex and reconstructive spinal surgery.

He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Joint Sections of Trauma and Critical Care and Spinal and Peripheral Nerves and North American Spine Society.

In addition to spinal reconstruction, Dr. Philips has a special interest in spine tumors, degenerative disease of the spine, brain tumors, traumatic brain injury and surgical treatment of epilepsy.

Dr. Philips is board certified in neurological surgery.

  • I received an appointment very quickly, the office staff were friendly and courteous. Dr. Phillips was very good at explaining what needs to be done and he was kind and patient, answering all my concerns.. I am grateful that he was recommended to me.

  • I really appreciated his honest answers and his approach right from the beginning of my visit. He came to get me, not an associate.

  • It was absolutely excellent experience. I was shocked to see the doctor himself come out and bring me into his examining room. Everything he did was perfect. He answered all of my questions.   • Dr Philips is too popular and overlooks. My appointment was for 3:45 but we weren't called.in til 4:30. HOWEVER, he did not rush my appointment and gave me his full attention. Eventhough he is completely overbooked next week, he agreed to see me as the last patient of the day..Scheduling me after normal hours.

  • I was able to get an appointment quickly with Dr Philips. It had been 11 months since our last discussion of my lower back issue but he came into the meeting fully prepared / knowledgeable with my history . We had a very productive discussion with a plan going forward.

I am medically complex , several failed surgeries , chronic pain syndrome , 2 bad hips etc. she was able to squeeze me in with Dr Phillips in a hurry due to my pain, she always tried to accommodate my needs , and seems to understand my health issues . Dr Phillip ma is amazing! He's abrupt yes but he's honest

  • Dr. Philipsu00A0and I have had a longstanding medical relationship and even though he is a surgeon, he is not driven to surgery. He listens, asks appropriate questions, and provides advice as warranted.

  • Dr.Philips is a phenomenal doctor! He is always so attentive to my situation! I just wish his staff was a little better calling back with appointments to get into see him. My chart sat somewhere in the office with a message to get me in for an appointment with him. I called the office back a 2nd time after 4 days of my 1st phone call because I hadn't heard back & I was in excruciating pain. When I finally did get into see him it was brought to my attention by Dr.Phillips that I need another back surgery.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and  Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office.  The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
