About Matthew Philips

Dr. Philips is a neurological surgeon in practice with Southcoast Neurosurgery. He is on the medical staff at St. Lukes Hospital in New Bedford, Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River and Tobey Hospital in Wareham.

A native of New Bedford, Dr. Philips is a graduate of Yale University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania and subspecialty fellowship training in complex and reconstructive spinal surgery.

He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Joint Sections of Trauma and Critical Care and Spinal and Peripheral Nerves and North American Spine Society.

In addition to spinal reconstruction, Dr. Philips has a special interest in spine tumors, degenerative disease of the spine, brain tumors, traumatic brain injury and surgical treatment of epilepsy.

Dr. Philips is board certified in neurological surgery.

  • Dr Phillips spent time asking questions and listening to my concerns. We discussed the next steps and when to return to his office . The office was very clean . I was seen at my exact appointment time .

  • I started seeing Dr Philips Oct 2019, we've been through a LOT with my sudden condition, he wasn't able to I get me into surgery with in a couple/few weeks (Nov 4,2019)! I was in a very bad place health wise and by the end of my visit he made sure he and the staff would do all in their power to make this as comfortable and smooth as possible! He thoroughly went over the recovery in a way I could understand and I appreciated that, but I felt "safe", I was ready and he knew it! Fast forward a little over a year and my symptoms were getting bad again (not due to anything Dr Philips did/didn't do, just the way my body healed from my first surgery as we found out when we went back in this past April), we did a video visit and he immediately ordered new scans to see what was going on, he didn't like what he wasn't seeing so he moved things along quickly and I went back in to get the surgery done again and I wasn't ok with that because I knew I was in the best hands I could possibly be in...the office always made sure messages got to Dr Philips, would make room for me to go in ASAP, always answered questions and would go above and beyond to fix any issues thrown our way, etc! I could go on and on about how much this office and Dr Philips mean to me but, I'd be here all day :) I have an appt for new MRIs on Wednesday because he's concerned about a few things and a follow up with Dr Philips on the 16th, I literally can't thank you enough Southcoast for having such a great surgeon right next door pretty much lol, there is no other surgeon I'd ever let touch my brain or spine again except him! He's a keeper :) If you made it this far, thank you for taking the time...I'm the type of person that gives credit where credit is due and it's def due! Happy New Year

  • The main difficulty is timeliness of getting appointments. Since COVID pandemic it is so hard getting care for other things that are not Covid.

  • Dr. Philips shows you what he is looking at on your X-rays, explains further treatment options in a way you can understand: asks questions about pain, gives straightforward answers, and you feel better just knowing you can trust his words.

  • I was impressed immediately when the doctor himself came out to the waiting room to bring me into his office.Dr Phillips was patient as I presented my problem, he carefully studied the prior exams, reports and notes.Then he explained in a manner that was easily understood what my options were with my condition. He gave me choices of what he can do to give me some relief. He also explained why he disagreed with the first doctors assessment and what his plan was for me. As a matter of fact you do not get to see the first neurosurgeon only his PA. To me that is like going to a pharmacy and let the pharmacy tech advise you as what should help my problem. Pharmacy techs know their job because I was one but I would never give medication advice to a patient that was not my job. But the first neurosurgeon after having the test he needed was quick to book my surgery and that was without even my talking to the doctor. I somehow knew I could trust Dr. Phillips with whatever decision I make in the long run.

  • I was very grateful with Dr. Philips saw me. I was 2 hours late. I was so stressed out. I had the wrong time even though there's plenty of ways to remind me, but he still fit me in and gave me all the attention I needed and listened and I am very grateful.

  • I was called into the doctor's office right on time. I wasn't expecting to see a doctor right away as this was my first visit and was scheduled to see see a NP. Dr Philips was professional, explained the results of my MRI, told me how he wanted to treat my condition and gave me a booklet about the procedure he wants to perform. He answered all ?'s.

  • I can't think of anything.It was an excellent first appointment.

  • Dr. Philips is simply the best. Professional, respectful, kind, honest, brilliant, and just a straight up nice man. I couldn't be happier. Also, his scheduler or office admin was super kind, came to the waiting room to let me know he was on his way. It was only 9:03 and my appointment was at 9am! Super kind.

  • Bigger waiting room due to number of patients waiting due to COVID. Masking not enough.

  • Although I had to wait 45 minutes to be seen it was obvious when I met with Dr. Phillips that he doesn't rush through an appointment and made me feel like my issue was important to him. I know someone else was probably waiting to see him and I truely appreciate that he took the time with me. It was also nice that he actually came and got me himself.

  • I feel like if you- if he would have listened to the patient's complaints, instead of being rushed, it would have improved my outcome. However, now I will seek care at Primacare.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and  Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office.  The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
