About Mark Shparber

A medical oncologist in the region for more than 20 years, Dr. Shparber has a unique perspective of the needs of cancer patients in our region. He also serves as the medical director for the hospice program at Southcoast VNA.

Dr. Shparber earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Cornell Medical Center. He completed his fellowship in hematology/oncology at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center.

He is board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine.

  • Visits are timely,friendly staff and Dr Shabarber is a saint...have the utmost confidence in his care

  • While getting information from a nurse navigator, there was a employee outside in the hall talking at the too of her lungs. I could not hear the nurse. Also I wear hearing aides and it was painful. It lasted for a few minutes. She needs to be told to lower her voice. She is not alone in the building.

  • The woman at the checkout desk that I was dealing with was absolutely amazing. The original appointment that I was going to have fell out of time where it was going to be really difficult for me to attend with a school and work schedule. So she re-booked everything to be earlier, which was amazing. However, I sat in a waiting room for 40 minutes and was only seen by the doctor for a total of 5 minute. A appointment that could have 100% been done over the phone that has now cost me $22 and a copay and about 4 or 5 hours out of my work where I'm not being paid. So a teleconference would've been much preferred for this and I'm quite frankly very annoyed at the fact that I sat around for 40 minutes and only saw the doctor for 5 minutes. Thank you.

  • Parking at the cancer center is almost impossible. It's horrible and if you want to get into the cancer parking lot and you have to press the button and it depends on who's there when it's going to be answered and I ended up being late for my appointment, very upset.

  • Checkup appointment was by phone. 1/2 hour late to call me. Very rushed and did not answer all questions that I had. I felt like it was rushed through. 9 minutes total and I still have questions and concerns. This doctor is very different when I see him in person. This phone checkup did not work well for me.

  • The appointment was a telemed with Dr. Shparber, but all the staff members who would call to confirm the appointment, and to get my husband's information before the telemed appointment with Dr. Shparber was wonderful. We had a great experience when we were up there in February. Everybody's just very, very kind, compassionate in that office.

  • The doctor was great! Calling your facility is a nightmare. I received a call hours before my appointment for screening questions but I was swimming and didn't get the call. She left a message. I called back a couple hours later. I was on hold for too long. When I finally reached someone she told me she was in the Fairhaven office and she would have someone in the Fall River office call me right away. It was not right away. It was about an hour later. Therefore, I was waiting by the phone for an hour. This was all for simple screening questions that seemed silly. Maybe this could have been done online' The doctor called 5-10 minutes late. Not a huge deal but after waiting in hold and waiting for a call from your department, it seemed frustrating.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and  Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office.  The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
