About Maria Openshaw

Maria Openshaw is a Certified Nurse-Midwife and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. She has been practicing since 2014 and joined Southcoast OB/GYN in 2021. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin American Studies and Spanish at Bowdoin College and a Master of Science degree in Nursing and Midwifery from University of California, San Francisco. Her clinical interests include reproductive justice and health equity, global health, and family planning.

Maria started her healthcare career in pediatric research, and would review postpartum medical records as well as interview participants about their pregnancy, labor and birth. She was inspired to become a midwife to help improve the health of families, and ultimately unite the two narratives so that the patient and provider are on the same page, leading patients to be more satisfied with their care. Maria’s philosophy of care is to honor the unique experiences, preferences, and stories of every patient and family that comes under her care. She welcomes all families in her practice, including immigrant families and those who identify as LGBTQ+.

When not at work caring for her patients, Maria enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, home design, and traveling. She appreciates the historic architecture and seafood of the Southcoast.

At Southcoast Health, we strive to deliver exceptional patient care along with an exceptional patient experience. We appreciate all of your feedback and share your comments to recognize the wonderful care our teams provide to you as well as identify areas for improvement.

  • The only thing that could be improved is punctuality regarding the appointment times for patients. If my appointment is at 10:30 am and I check in well before my appointment (say, 10 or 15 minutes earlier), the patient should be seen at the scheduled time. This way, the patient doesn't have to wait up to 45 minutes past their appointment time.

  • Maria always knows my medical history and remembers the little details. She is always respectful and cares for my wishes and what makes me comfortable. Maria went through extra effort to get me onto her schedule consistently because she is the provider I am most comfortable with even though her schedule is very busy

  • We have had wonderful experiences with the doctors and midwives so far. The nurses could definitely be a little friendlier. Also, we had to wait over 15 after our appointment start time even after arriving early.

  • Maria was kind, patient, and thorough with her questions. I felt safe and comfortable during my visit and felt like I had the opportunity to ask lots of questions about my health.

  • Excellent service, doctor and staff. Very attentive, cordial and respectful.

  • All very well and the best attention.

  • She is courteous, kind, listens effectively and compassionately. Really a great provider

  • Excellent treatment of me, and professionalism on the part of the staff.

  • He did everything very excellently.

  • I will only see Maria because she makes me feel heard, comfortable, and always remembers my history-even the small things like my husbands or sons name.

  • There's not a thing i would change. The doctor is amazing and very attentive. I was taken in the room within minutes of being there.

Southcoast Health physician profiles now feature star ratings.  Below, you’ll find frequently asked questions about our process for calculating the ratings.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and  Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office.  The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
