Doctors’ Note – January 2024

Dear Southcoast Health Community,

Here we are at the beginning of a New Year filled with new promise and the initiative to become a better version of ourselves. For many of us, that means putting our health first, and in many instances with the goal to lose weight. As a matter of fact, losing weight is one of the top New Year’s resolutions made by so many, but only a few people are able to reach their goal.

For those looking to lose a substantial amount of weight, weight loss surgery may be the right choice to hit your weight loss goals. Many people feel that weight loss surgery is not for them and only available or suggested for severely obese patients. The reality is that many patients qualify by having a BMI of 40 or higher or have a BMI over 35 and are taking medications for various high risk medical conditions. Our team here at Southcoast Health can assist you with any steps needed to confirm your eligibility with your insurance.

Patients who had weight loss surgery have been able to improve, if not eliminate, many common medical issues such as:

  • Chronic joint pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Sleep apnea and breathing problems
  • Mental illness such as depression and anxiety

We understand that there are many hesitations when considering weight loss surgery:

“What will my family and friends say?”

We understand that there is an unfortunate stigma around having weight loss surgery and we would love the opportunity to help you understand the great health benefits that this life altering surgery can provide you with. Many feel that having weight loss surgery is an “easy way out” to lose weight or is in some way shape or form, “cheating”. This notion couldn’t but farther from the truth.

Weight loss surgery is just another tool patients use to lose weight and become the best version of themselves. Patients who have weight loss surgery continue to watch their calorie intake and exercise regularly to maintain their weight loss.

What if there are risks with weight loss surgery?”

Many patients experience anxiety about having weight loss surgery and that feeling is perfectly normal with any type of surgery.

We are the region’s leader in weight loss surgery, with over 9,000 procedures performed. Our use of minimally invasive techniques helps you recover quicker and the risks of obesity are much greater than those of surgery. Weight loss surgery can also help reduce your risk for costly and complicated health problems and conditions later in life.

What happens after the surgery?”

Your weight loss care does not end with surgery. At Southcoast Health you will receive continued care with our specialists, dieticians, and support groups to provide you with the best tools to continue maintaining your new found health.

We offer a supportive community and have various support groups that you can easily attend from the comfort of your own home!
