About Richard Dowd, MD, MS
Dr. Richard Dowd earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. He then went on to earn both his Master of Science in Clinical Investigation and his Doctor of Medicine from the New York University School of Medicine, in New York City, New York. Dr. Dowd specializes in Neurosurgery and Endoscopic Spine Surgery.
He completed his Residency at the Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts and a fellowship of Neurosurgical Oncology at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.
His philosophy of care is believing that care is a partnership between a doctor and patient. He believes that as a doctor, it is his job to help patients understand the problem at hand. Together they review all options and decide on what they feel is the best path to take.
When not at work he enjoys spending time with his family, sailing, hiking, and playing guitar.

It takes a long time to get an appointment. Needs seem to exceed capacity. But it also takes a long time to get events scheduled. Is staff too small?
Dr. Dowd was great! Got me in for an appointment the same week as I got a referral - he explained everything and took the time to make sure I understood.
Dr. Dowd was amazing. He helped me understand what was going on with my health and made me feel extremely comfortable. He spoke to me in a way that made it easy for me to understand.

Hi, this doctor is brand new to me and he was great today. I went along with my brother and we discussed things and he gave a number of options for treatment and we decided on the best course of action. So again, very glad to be with him. And so very glad to see him in about a month and get my surgery.
I can't say enough good things about Dr. Dowd. He's kind and caring. He's easy to talk to and explains everything perfectly.

Dr. Dowd was terrific. My surgical outcome was superb. He is easy to talk to and communicate with. He is a good listener. I would and in fact have recommended him to others. My only criticism is that the system seems overloaded. Getting surgery dates takes a long time when in pain.
This was my first appointment with Dr. Dowd, but I was just very comfortable with him. It seemed like he had known me forever. He knew all about what was wrong. He answered my questions. He tried to help me as much as he could. He has referred me to somebody else, but I will be going back for a return visit with him in a few weeks. I appreciated him, his effort, and everything he had to say.

The whole entire visit was absolutely wonderful. They from the front desk to the nurses to the case manager to the doctor and on the way out and on the way in, all wonderful. Listened to me, knew I was upset, knew that I was scared about everything and they were fantastic.u00A0
