About Richard Dowd MD, MS
Dr. Richard Dowd earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. He then went on to earn both his Master of Science in Clinical Investigation and his Doctor of Medicine from the New York University School of Medicine, in New York City, New York. Dr. Dowd specializes in Neurosurgery and Endoscopic Spine Surgery.
He completed his Residency at the Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts and a fellowship of Neurosurgical Oncology at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.
His philosophy of care is believing that care is a partnership between a doctor and patient. He believes that as a doctor, it is his job to help patients understand the problem at hand. Together they review all options and decide on what they feel is the best path to take.
When not at work he enjoys spending time with his family, sailing, hiking, and playing guitar.

My appointment was very prompt. The physician greeted me in the waiting room himself. He spent all the time I needed answering my questions, showing me my MRI, really explaining all my options for care, and I was very appreciative.
From the front desk to Dr.Dowd I always have a good experience in this office. Dr. Dowd always listens to completely and always has a plan of care that keeps me confident in achieving my health goals!
Dr. Dowd was very amiable and made me feel very comfortable talking with him. He seemed genuinely interested in the issue for which I saw him. He explained everything in a way that was easy for me to understand and we were on the same page regarding how to move forward. Dr. Dowd was attentive, had read my history and understood exactly why I was there to see him. He ordered the necessary test needed and I was given a follow up appointment within a week of my testing. He is extremely thorough in his examination as well as future planning for expected necessary medical care. I could not find a better Neuro surgeon than him!u00A0

This appointment was my last post surgery visit with Dr Dowd. After He incredibly helped me get my life back. A year ago I was unable to walk after having a herniated disk and nerve damage down my leg. It was quite the journey getting back to normal and I couldn't have done it without Dr Dowd. I thanked him at this visit, but could never thank him enough!! Southcoast is extremely blessed to have him.

Dr Dowd's staff was able to have me seen earlier that what was orginal told. They were friendly and professional. Dr Dowd was also friendly and reviewed my Ct scan with me. He ordered an MRI and prescribed something to help me with the claustrophobic. I am glad I was recommended to Dr Drowd.
