Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery at Southcoast Health

At Southcoast Health, we are proud to offer one of the most successful and popular treatments for weight loss, the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. At our Southcoast Health Weight Loss, our healthcare professionals will work with you to help you fully understand the procedure before you take this next step.

What is Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery?

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is a popular weight loss surgery that creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes the digestive tract to bypass a significant portion of the stomach and the beginning of the small intestine.

Procedure Overview

  • Stomach Pouch Creation – A small pouch is formed from the upper part of the stomach, which limits the amount of food that can be consumed
  • Intestinal Rerouting – The small intestine is divided and reconnected to the new stomach pouch, bypassing most of the stomach and the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine)

Benefits

  • Significant Weight Loss – On average, patients lose about 60-80% of their excess body weight within the first 12-18 months after surgery
  • Improvement in Comorbidities – RYGB often leads to significant improvements in obesity-related conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea
  • Effective Restriction and Malabsorption – Combines both restrictive and malabsorptive mechanisms for effective weight loss

Considerations

  • Nutritional Deficiencies – Lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation is required to prevent deficiencies due to reduced nutrient absorption
  • Surgical Risks – Includes risks such as infection, blood clots, and potential complications related to the digestive tract
  • Lifestyle Changes – Significant and permanent changes in diet and lifestyle are essential for long-term success

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass – What to Expect & Recovery

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass when performed robotically, allows for smaller incisions, less discomfort and a quicker recovery. Most patients stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days and return to light activities within 2 to 4 weeks. During recovery, patients follow a structured diet that progresses from liquids to soft foods and eventually to solid meals over several weeks. Some may experience fatigue, bowel changes, or mild discomfort early on. Gastric bypass often results in more rapid weight loss and can lead to significant improvement or resolution of conditions like type 2 diabetes. The whole weight loss journey will be with guidance from the Southcoast Health Weight Loss team.
