Breast Cancer Prevention: Small Steps that Make a Big Difference
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a time to educate, raise awareness and empower individuals to take action to prevent breast cancer. This month Dr. Keren Braithwaite discusses how the power of prevention can help you take charge of your breast health.
As a physician, I’ve seen how powerful early detection and prevention can be. It saves lives. And the best part? You have more control over your breast health than you might think.
Start with Regular Screenings
If you’re 40 or older talk with your healthcare provider about scheduling a mammogram. Mammograms can detect cancer early, when treatment can be most effective. It’s one of the simplest, most powerful steps you can take.
Southcoast Health recommends annual mammograms to prevent cancer from growing undetected until it is harder to cure. In addition to traditional mammograms, other screening options include:
- 3D Mammography (Tomosynthesis): Available at Southcoast Health Breast Care, this leading-edge imaging technology enables radiologists to better identify problems hiding in dense breast tissue, while differentiating normal, overlapping tissue.
- Breast MRI: Recommended for high-risk individuals and as supplemental screening for women with dense breasts, especially those with a family history or known genetic mutations.
- Breast Ultrasound: Can also be used as a supplemental screening for women with dense breasts or those at higher risk.
Each screening method has its own advantages and disadvantages, and a personalized approach can help you receive the most accurate results.
Know Your Body
You are your own best advocate. Be aware of what’s normal for you and let your doctor know of any changes such as:
- New lumps or swelling
- Changes in breast size or shape
- Nipple discharge or inversion
- Skin dimpling or thickening
- Pain in a specific area of the breast
Not all changes mean breast cancer, but it’s always safest to check.
Adopt Healthy Habits
While not all breast cancers can be prevented, lifestyle choices make a difference. These small, steady steps add up over time:
- Eat a balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains
- Exercise regularly
- Manter um peso saudável
- Limit alcohol and don’t smoke
Don’t Skip Your Care
Life gets busy, but your health deserves a place on your calendar. Whether it’s booking your mammogram, keeping up with checkups, or making that first appointment, taking action now can make all the difference later.
A linha de fundo
Early detection saves lives. Schedule your mammogram, know your body, and take small steps every day toward a healthier future.
Breast cancer is highly treatable when detected early. Make regular screenings an essential part of proactive healthcare, regardless of your age or risk factors. If you’re unsure when to start, talk to your healthcare provider about a screening plan that’s right for you.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, take charge of your health by prioritizing routine screenings, and encourage those you love to do the same.
