About Dennis Fitzgerald, MD
Dennis Fitzgerald, MD earned his Doctor of Medicine from the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell University in Hempstead, New York. He completed his neurology residency and fellowship in cognitive neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Dr. Fitzgerald’s path to neurology was shaped by personal experiences that sparked a deep curiosity about the brain and human behavior. Early loss in his family led him to seek understanding of how the brain influences the lives we’re able to live. These formative experiences, combined with his mother’s inspiring example as a single parent raising three boys while working full time as an attorney, instilled in him both scientific curiosity and a commitment to compassionate care.
He believes in connecting with patients as people first. His appointments begin with open conversation, where he learns about patients’ backgrounds and interests. “Follow-ups end up feeling like seeing an old friend,” he notes. This approach strengthens his commitment to helping each patient navigate their diagnosis and treatment.
His clinical interests include behavioral neurology with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body Disease. Dr. Fitzgerald takes time to educate patients about their conditions, explaining the neuroscience in accessible terms. He believes that understanding transforms an intimidating diagnosis into something more manageable, empowering patients and families to navigate their journey with greater confidence.
Outside of work, Dr. Fitzgerald most enjoys spending time with his wife and is also an avid drummer who draws inspiration from masters like Larnell Lewis and Dennis Chambers.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.
Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.
How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office. The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
