Dr. John Podkowa Named Executive Chief of Primary Care

Southcoast Health recognizes the critical importance of expanding access to high-quality primary care and believes that it is the foundation of a healthy community. With that commitment in mind, we are pleased to share that our own Dr. John Podkowa has been named Executive Chief of Primary Care, while continuing to serve our organization as a primary care provider.

“Dr. Podkowa brings deep clinical experience, strong leadership, and a patient-centered approach that will help guide the continued growth and success of our primary care services,” said Dennis La Rock, MD, President of Southcoast Physicians Group, Executive Vice President, Chief Physician Officer at Southcoast Health. “In this new role, Dr. Podkowa will focus on improving the care patients receive, making it easier to access great care, and supporting the overall health of our communities.”

As Executive Chief, Dr. Podkowa is charged with leading all Southcoast Health Primary Care providers in delivering exceptional patient care, ensuring excellent quality outcomes, and improving access to Primary Care services. In addition, this new role will give Dr. Podkowa a platform to advance provider wellness initiatives, design efficient and effective models of care, implement innovative programs that benefit our patients and communities, and ensure that Southcoast Health remains a health system where Primary Care providers can thrive.

Since joining Southcoast Health in 2009, Dr. Podkowa has been deeply dedicated to caring for patients and supporting his colleagues. Alongside his work as a Primary Care physician, he has served as Medical Director for Southcoast Health Network, Regional Chief of Primary Care, and Chief Medical Information Officer and Senior Vice President. His leadership has always been rooted in improving how care is delivered and experienced.

Dr. Podkowa’s commitment to compassion extends beyond the exam room. He partnered with Southcoast Health to establish the Nicole Podkowa Patient & Caregiver Fund, which provides financial support to Southcoast Health Cancer Care patients in need, reflecting his belief that caring for patients means supporting them as people, not just treating illness.
