About Raj K. Thakrar, MD
Raj K. Thakrar, MD earned his Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, followed by a Master of Science in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He subsequently conducted biomedical engineering research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before obtaining his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, VT.
Dr. Thakrar went on to complete a General Surgery Internship at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, followed by a Residency in Neurological Surgery at the University of Vermont Medical Center. He then pursued advanced Fellowship training in Complex Reconstructive and Oncologic Spine Neurosurgery at Brown University Health.
His philosophy of care is built on empathy, communication, and individualized treatment. He believes effective care begins with listening – understanding not only symptoms, but also each patient’s concerns, goals, and values. Whenever possible, he emphasizes nonoperative options first. When surgery is the best course, he focuses on precise, patient-specific solutions that are technically sound, minimally invasive when appropriate, and tailored to each individual’s unique needs.
Dr. Thakrar’s path to medicine was shaped early in life beginning with his own newborn health challenges, and deepened by seeing the disparities his immigrant family faced in accessing care. These experiences inspired him to pursue medicine not only as a career, but also as a platform for advocacy and change.
He was ultimately drawn to Neurosurgery, and to Complex Spine Surgery in particular, for its combination of intellectual depth, technical precision, and the opportunity to profoundly improve a person’s quality of life. To him, each patient is more than a diagnosis; they are a person navigating pain, uncertainty, and hope. His role is to guide them with clarity, compassion, and partnership.
At Southcoast Health, Dr. Thakrar is committed to delivering high-quality, innovative Neurosurgical care to the local community, and to help build a world-class Spine program grounded in safety, compassion, collaboration, and clinical excellence.
Outside of the operating room, Dr. Thakrar enjoys working out, traveling, playing piano, and cooking — a hobby he finds both therapeutic and delicious.

Why aren’t there any ratings?
We do not have a rating for this provider for one of the following reasons:- Provider was newly added to our survey process and has not yet received the minimum number (30) of survey returns. Check back soon for results!
- If this provider’s biography page does not specify practicing at Southcoast Physicians Group or a Southcoast hospital site (Charlton Memorial, St. Luke’s or Tobey Hospital), he/she is affiliated with Southcoast Health Network but not employed by Southcoast Physicians Group. Our affiliates are not included in our survey process.
- If this provider’s biography page specifies practicing at Charlton Memorial, St. Luke’s or Tobey Hospital, without reference to an outpatient practice, he/she delivers care in the inpatient hospital setting only; inpatient surveys do not include questions about individual providers.
Southcoast Health physician profiles now feature star ratings. Below, you’ll find frequently asked questions about our process for calculating the ratings.
Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.
Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.
How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office. The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
