Recently, Southcoast Health the official orthopedic provider of the Providence College Friars, teamed up with Corey Floyd Jr. and Olivia Rodrigues, standout student-athletes from Providence College’s basketball programs, to bring inspiration, encouragement, and energy to children at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater New Bedford and Fall River.

The visits were part of an ongoing community outreach initiative aimed at connecting local kids with positive role models to learn the value of hard work, education, and perseverance. Corey and Olivia shared their personal stories and engaged in conversations about the importance of staying focused, believing in yourself, and making healthy life choices. The visits also included basketball shootarounds and group discussions, followed by photos with the athletes and autograph signings that will be sure to leave a lasting impression for years to come.

For Olivia Rodrigues, the experience was especially meaningful. A freshman guard majoring in social work, Olivia grew up in New Bedford and attended the very same Boys & Girls Club she returned to. Born at St. Luke’s Hospital, she credits the Club for helping shape her into the person and athlete she is today. Her homecoming sent a powerful message to the kids in her hometown that success is possible with commitment and heart.

“It was an amazing event,” said Olivia. “Being back home and in the Boys and Girls Clubs gyms that I grew up in was so nostalgic, and I was very grateful for the opportunity to share my story with the kids.”

Corey Floyd Jr., a senior majoring in social science, also plays guard for the Friars. Throughout the day, Corey shared his journey with the kids, offering insight into what it takes to succeed both on the court and in the classroom. His calm confidence and honest advice resonated with many of the young athletes in attendance.

“I had great time with the kids of the Boys and Girls Club! They brought me great joy and energy and reminded me of what it was like to be a kid again,” said Corey. “I hope I was able to give them a sense of hope, as they did for me. I truly thank Southcoast Health for allowing me this great opportunity.”

“Southcoast Health’s partnership with Providence College Athletics reflects our shared mission to promote wellness and empowerment within our communities,” said Joseph Lifrak, MD, an Orthopedic Surgeon at Southcoast Health. “Seeing Olivia and Corey inspire children at the Boys & Girls Clubs today reinforced how important role models are for kids. I couldn’t be prouder of the impact our partnership is having in the community.”

More outreach events are expected in the future as the collaboration between Southcoast Health and the Providence College Friars continues to grow.
