About James Witkowski MD
Dr. James Witkowski is the Executive Chief of Medicine at Southcoast Health.
With over 20 years of clinical leadership experience, Dr. Witkowski began his career in the United States Navy as a Medical Officer before joining Southcoast Health where he has served as the Hospitalist Site Medical Director at Charlton Memorial Hospital since 2008.
Throughout his clinical career, Dr. Witkowski has taken on numerous leadership roles within his work, including serving as the President of the Medical Staff at Charlton Memorial throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Site Medical Director for the Southcoast Physicians Group Hospitalist program.
After overseeing the rapid growth of the hospitalist program, Dr. Witkowski was appointed to serve as Executive Chief of Medicine in 2026. In this position he is responsible for leading the system-wide Medicine program at all three Southcoast Health hospitals in strategic initiatives with a special focus on recruitment, talent development, productivity and clinical efficiencies across all hospital medical specialties.
Dr. Witkowski is board certified in Internal Medicine and earned his undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Virgina before going on to the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed both his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virgina.
During his time there, he was named the 2021 Internal Medicine Intern of the Year. Later in his military career, Dr. Witkowski was also awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal recognizing his outstanding contribution and leadership while serving as the Department Head of Internal Medicine at the Naval Hospital Cherry Point in 2005.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.
Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.
How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office. The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
