About Edward J. Testa MD

Edward J. Testa, MD earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology and his Doctor of Medicine from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.

Dr. Testa completed advanced fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Shoulder & Elbow Surgery at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, North Carolina, as well as additional fellowship training in Orthopedic Trauma at Brown University. He also pursued international shoulder surgery training in Switzerland, gaining further expertise in the management of complex shoulder pathology and reconstructive surgery. During his fellowship at OrthoCarolina, he served as an assistant team physician for the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte FC, and Charlotte Knights (AAA), providing experience in the care of professional and elite athletes.

He chose orthopedic surgery because of its ability to help patients return to their activities and quality of life that matter most to them. He enjoys the combination of anatomy, biomechanics, technical problem solving, and building lasting relationships with patients throughout their recovery.

His clinical interests include primary and revision shoulder arthroplasty, including anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacement; shoulder instability, including arthroscopic stabilization and complex bony reconstructive procedures such as Latarjet and bone graft reconstruction; rotator cuff repair and reconstruction, including tendon transfers for irreparable tears; sports-related injuries of the shoulder and elbow, including ligament injuries and tendon tears. He also performs elbow arthroscopy and elbow arthroplasty and treats shoulder and elbow arthritis, UCL and other elbow ligament injuries, as well as fractures of the shoulder and elbow.

Dr. Testa’s approach to care is centered on listening, clear communication, and individualized treatment. He takes time to explain diagnoses and discuss surgical and nonsurgical options, helping each patient make informed decisions on their goals.

When not at work, he enjoys swimming, fitness, spending time with family and friends, music, and being outdoors.

Why aren’t there any ratings?

We do not have a rating for this provider for one of the following reasons:
  1. Provider was newly added to our survey process and has not yet received the minimum number (30) of survey returns.  Check back soon for results!
  2. If this provider’s biography page does not specify practicing at Southcoast Physicians Group or a Southcoast hospital site (Charlton Memorial, St. Luke’s or Tobey Hospital), he/she is affiliated with Southcoast Health Network but not employed by Southcoast Physicians Group.  Our affiliates are not included in our survey process.
  3. If this provider’s biography page specifies practicing at Charlton Memorial, St. Luke’s or Tobey Hospital, without reference to an outpatient practice, he/she delivers care in the inpatient hospital setting only; inpatient surveys do not include questions about individual providers.

Southcoast Health physician profiles now feature star ratings.  Below, you’ll find frequently asked questions about our process for calculating the ratings.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?

Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?

Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?

Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and  Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office.  The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
