What is a Colonoscopy?

Colonoscopies are performed to exam any changes in the colon and rectum. A colonoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Using a long, flexible tube with a camera (colonoscope), your doctor can detect abnormalities such as polyps, inflammation, or signs of colorectal cancer. It’s not only a powerful diagnostic tool — it can also help prevent cancer by allowing for the removal of precancerous polyps during the same procedure.

Why a Colonoscopy Is Performed?

Some reasons for having a colonoscopy could include:

Routine Screening

  • Recommended for adults at average risk starting at age 45.
  • Helps detect colorectal cancer early — when it’s most treatable.

Evaluation of Symptoms

  • Investigates unexplained symptoms like:
    • Abdominal pain
    • Rectal bleeding
    • Changes in bowel habits
    • Unexplained weight loss

Surveillance

  • For individuals with:
    • A history of colon polyps
    • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
    • Genetic conditions like Lynch syndrome or FAP

Higher Risk Populations

  • Black/African Americans, American Indian/Alaska Native individuals, and Ashkenazi Jews face higher risks and may benefit from earlier or more frequent screenings.

What To Expect

Before the Procedure

Proper preparation is essential for a successful colonoscopy:

  • One Week Before: Follow a low-fiber diet and stop certain medications as advised.
  • Day Before: Switch to a clear liquid diet and take a prescribed laxative in split doses.
  • Day Of: Arrange for a ride home. Nothing to eat or drink until after the procedure.

During the Procedure

  • Takes 30 to 60 minutes.
  • You’ll receive sedation to keep you comfortable.
  • The doctor will insert the colonoscope to examine the colon and may remove polyps or take biopsies if needed.

After the Procedure

  • You’ll recover in a monitored area until the sedation wears off.
  • Mild bloating or gas is normal.
  • A doctor will review initial findings with you; biopsy results may take a few days.
  • You’ll need someone to drive you home and should rest for the remainder of the day.

Results

Your doctor will explain the results of your colonoscopy and recommend next steps based on what was found:

  • Normal Results: No abnormalities; your next screening may be in 10 years (if you’re at average risk).
  • Polyps Found: Removed during the procedure and sent for testing. Follow-up schedule depends on the type and number of polyps.
  • Biopsy Needed: If tissue samples were taken, results will be shared once available.
