Goodspeed Endowed Chair
In a clinical career spanning nearly 40 years at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Paul E. Gaudreau, Jr. RN, was known for his sharp critical thinking skills, leadership as a clinician, and ability to build trust
among providers and other clinicians alike. Over the past decade, Paul worked in the Clinical Quality department as a Professional Practice Specialist supporting multiple departments in peer review, case review, focused professional practice evaluation, and process improvement.
Dedicated to improving quality management through education and applied learning, he was known as a terrific professional mentor and remained committed to those goals every day.
Sadly, Paul passed away after a brief illness in April 2021 at the age of 60. His friends and colleagues chose to honor his legacy by supporting The Ronald B. Goodspeed, MD Endowed Chair in Patient Safety & Quality at Southcoast Health. The appointment was established at Charlton Memorial Hospital to ensure standards of practice remain and are enhanced for future generations of patients and caregivers.
Through scholarship, symposia, and the stewardship of resources, the Goodspeed Chair continues the pursuit of patient safety and quality care expressed by Dr. Goodspeed throughout his career. The Goodspeed Chair is awarded to a physician or senior member of the hospital clinical staff who advocates for the further elevation of the standards for patient safety and quality of care.
“Paul had a heart of gold,” said Dr. Dani Hackner, MD MBA FACP FCCP, Chief Clinical Officer and current Goodspeed Chair, “and I loved our chats as Paul always enlightened me with a gem of understanding about a case, a provider or the community.”
Paul’s warmth, intelligence, and caring personality will be missed, however, his legacy continues on.
In memory of Paul, a future Goodspeed event will be created in his honor, allocating support for nursing development.
“Paul was a connector. He was naturally caring and empathetic, and people gravitated towards him because they could sense his interest in them was genuine — he really fostered a family atmosphere.”
Joyce Botelho, BSN RN-BC, Professional Practice Specialist and a clinical colleague and friend of Paul’s for more than 30 years.
