Promoting Health and Wellness in the South Coast Region
Southcoast Health is committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care that serves the specific needs of our community and is fully engaged with our community partners to improve factors that can lead to better health.
Called the social determinants of health, these issues range from educational and employment opportunities to access to safe and stable housing, healthy food, and transportation. It’s also important for people to feel safe leaving their homes to get the food, healthcare and other services they need.
Health+ features content on services our community needs, as well as how our community partnerships help promote health and wellness in the region.
In “Partner Up,” you will learn how Southcoast Health is collaborating with the UMass Dartmouth Public Policy Center to collect and review data to break down local barriers to healthcare.
Breaking down barriers was the inspiration of a presentation given by Dr. Victor Pricolo, Chief of General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery for Southcoast Health, at the Immigrants’ Assistance Center in New Bedford. With the help of an interpreter, Dr. Pricolo led a lively discussion on the importance of screening colonoscopies and risk factors for colon cancer. Read about it in “Spreading Prevention.”
In a nod to February being heart month, we present an overview of our comprehensive cardiac services and some of the outstanding physicians who lead the charge in battling heart disease in “We’ve Got Your Heart Care Covered.” We are pleased to see that the rates of heart disease in the South Coast have declined over the past decade, but they still remain higher than the state average. We are committed to changing that.
Read “Better Technology, Better Health” to learn how the advanced technology in our Breast Center is making mammography and treatment more effective and comfortable. And with the opening of a Fall River location, in addition to our original Dartmouth site, these services are even more convenient.
Be sure to take a look on the back page of this issue to get a glimpse of some of the newest physicians to join Southcoast Health.
