Meet the New Doctors

Three of Southcoast’s newest physicians tell Health+ how they approach patient care

Nicola Francalancia, MD, FACS, Cardiothoracic surgeon

Dr. Francalancia studied engineering before he became a doctor. He was inspired to become a physician when he learned how health affects a person’s ability to enjoy life.

After earning his medical degree, Dr. Francalancia completed a residency in general surgery and a thoracic surgery fellowship. He also completed a research fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery and a clinical fellowship in cardiovascular surgery.

As an experienced cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Francalancia specializes in procedures of the heart, lungs, esophagus and other organs in the chest. He says he has long been fascinated with the heart’s physiology and has a special interest in cardiac surgery in elderly patients.

Dr. Francalancia practices More than medicine by encouraging patients to live a meaningful life. He sees health as the ability to enjoy life rather than just a means to survive.

When not working, Dr. Francalancia spends time with his wife, three children, mother and dog. He says, “Only one sits when I ask, two provide important counsel, three bring the highest level of joy achievable, and all are in constant motion around the others.”

Dr. Franaclancia is certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society and Society of Thoracic Surgeons. His clinical interests are coronary and valvular diseases.

Jenni Petrella, DO, Pediatrician

Dr. Petrella was drawn to medicine because, as a child, she witnessed illnesses in her family. When one of her younger siblings passed away, then-15-year-old Jenni knew she would pursue pediatrics.

After earning her medical degree, Dr. Petrella completed a residency in pediatrics, where she cared for an 8-year-old trauma patient for more than three months. As he grew up, the boy continued writing letters to her, and that personal connection showed her that her job is More than medicine.

“In my day-to-day practice, I make it a point to listen to my patients of all ages,” she says. “I have always felt that children should be a central part of their care, along with their parents.”

In her personal time, Dr. Petrella likes to travel, garden, paint and spend time with her family, including her newborn.

Dr. Petrella is board certified in General Pediatrics and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Osteopathic Association. Her clinical interests include vaccination education and safety tips to prevent accidents in the home.

William Rockett, MD, General Surgeon

Growing up in a medical family inspired Dr. Rockett to become a physician. Watching his father, a neurosurgeon, and his mother, a general surgeon, motivated him to become a surgeon as well.

Dr. Rockett studied classics at Harvard before going to medical school. He went on to complete an internship and residency in general surgery.

Dr. Rockett practices More than medicine by making education a significant part of his practice. He wants his patients to understand their surgery and what to expect during recovery, so they can achieve the best outcomes.

In his spare time, Dr. Rockett attends his children’s sporting events and enjoys theater. Often, he volunteers his time doing stage setting for the drama program at Dover-Sherborn Regional High School.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgery and is a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society. His clinical interests include the gallbladder, hernia repairs and colon resections.
