If you would like to experience our “patient forward, patient first” take on emergency care in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, come to one of our 24/7 Emergency Departments at St. Luke’s, Charlton Memorial or Tobey Hospital when you need immediate, dependable care.

St. Luke’s Emergency Department

St. Luke’s Hospital provides our community round-the-clock emergency care through our newly expanded emergency department in New Bedford, MA. Our ED sees more than 90,000 visits annually, and is relied on for 24/7 ED care across the South Coast. Special Features include:

  • 60 private exam rooms with space for family
  • Rapid Assessment Zone for high quality, efficient assessment and treatment of minor medical emergencies
  • Secure unit for patients with behavioral health needs
  • Dedicated Pediatric emergency department run by Boston Children’s Hospital physicians

Boston Children’s Hospital Physicians at St. Luke’s ED

Our team of Boston Children’s physicians offers round-the-clock, on-site pediatric inpatient care and is working with local emergency medicine providers in a customized pediatric area in the emergency department at St. Luke’s Hospital.

As always, excellent emergency care for children is also available at Tobey Hospital in Wareham and Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. The emergency physicians at these locations can consult remotely with the Boston Children’s physicians at any time. If a child arriving at Tobey or Charlton Memorial needs to be hospitalized, he or she may be transferred to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford.

Boston Children’s physicians at St. Luke’s Hospital are not only able to provide on-site care — they can consult with other Boston Children’s physicians and specialists. For example, a child’s radiology images and other medical documents can be sent electronically to Boston in the event that they need to be transferred to Boston. We can also bring Boston Children’s ICU team ‘into the room’ to help manage the care of a critically ill child in the Emergency Department at St. Luke’s with the help of a video robot.

Charlton Memorial Hospital Emergency Department

Treating over 70,000 patients per year, CMH is the recognized regional leader in cardiovascular care, and provides the broad specialty coverage of a teaching center without the impersonality, chaos, and long wait times. Long relied upon by generations of Fall River families, and known as where local doctors bring their own family members when they are ill, Charlton also attracts patients from the surrounding communities in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island who value expert and compassionate urgent or Emergency care.

Tobey Hospital Emergency Department

With the resources of a bigger city Emergency Department, and the friendliness and warmth of a small community hospital, Tobey offers the ideal destination for both urgent and emergency medical problems. Most of the over 30,000 patients treated can receive expert and definitive care right here, without the stress and inconvenience of leaving their community. For those few who require sub-specialty medical or surgical consultation, access to Southcoast’s full range of specialists is always available either in-house, or by expedited priority transfer to nearby St. Luke’s or Charlton campuses.

Southcoast Health offers comprehensive emergency services to patients in Fall River, New Bedford, Wareham and across southeastern Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island.
