Maureen Chung<\/a>onc\u00f3logo quir\u00fargico y director m\u00e9dico de la Programa de atenci\u00f3n mamaria de Southcoast Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Dra. Chung le dijo a Patti que se despreocupara. Como m\u00e9dico de Patti, dijo, era su trabajo preocuparse, primero de si hab\u00eda c\u00e1ncer y luego de c\u00f3mo utilizar mejor los profundos recursos y la experiencia de Southcoast para tratarlo. La Dra. Chung le asegur\u00f3 a Patti que la sacar\u00eda adelante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Me dijo: 'Te vamos a quitar la preocupaci\u00f3n', y as\u00ed lo hicieron\", cuenta Patti. \"Nunca sent\u00ed que no estar\u00eda bien. Todos me hicieron sentir segura\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La biopsia mostr\u00f3 c\u00e1ncer en el conducto galact\u00f3foro, pero estaba encapsulado y los m\u00e9dicos de Patti cre\u00edan que no se hab\u00eda extendido. Patti se inform\u00f3 r\u00e1pidamente sobre su enfermedad y las opciones de tratamiento y, tras hacer muchas preguntas, opt\u00f3 por la cirug\u00eda conservadora de la mama, que extirpa el tejido canceroso dejando la mayor parte posible de la mama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Una vez que tom\u00f3 la decisi\u00f3n, \"muchas cosas sucedieron realmente r\u00e1pido\", dijo. \"Me sent\u00ed muy agradecida por la rapidez. No soy el tipo de persona a la que le gusta sentarse y esperar\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En siete semanas, tuvo 28 citas con el m\u00e9dico, incluidas pruebas gen\u00e9ticas y una reuni\u00f3n con Dr. Tushar Kumar,<\/a> un onc\u00f3logo radioterapeuta de Southcoast. Tambi\u00e9n se someti\u00f3 a cuatro procedimientos, empezando por la biopsia y la colocaci\u00f3n de un alambre para localizar el punto en el que el cirujano pudiera obtener m\u00e1rgenes limpios, es decir, tejido libre de c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En junio, fue operada en Hospital Charlton Memorial<\/a> para extirpar el tumor y ese mismo d\u00eda estaba en casa. Luego, en julio, le insertaron un cat\u00e9ter para prepararla para la braquiterapia, una radioterapia dirigida que consiste en implantar material radiactivo para da\u00f1ar el ADN de las c\u00e9lulas cancerosas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Est\u00e1 agradecida por haber podido recibir una atenci\u00f3n tan excelente cerca de casa, sin tener que viajar a Boston o Providence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Todas las personas que conoc\u00ed en Southcoast me dedicaron todo el tiempo que quise\", dice. \"Hab\u00eda tanta compasi\u00f3n. No pod\u00eda creer lo desinteresados y amables que eran, siempre iban m\u00e1s all\u00e1\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoy, dice, est\u00e1 curada y ha recuperado la energ\u00eda. Vuelve a estar ocupada haciendo ganchillo, horneando y cuidando un enorme huerto que da productos para enlatar y congelar. Y, por supuesto, est\u00e1 la alegr\u00eda de estar con su marido, sus hijos y sus nietos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
