Paul Graves Hammerness earned his medical degree at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire. He completed Psychiatry Residency followed by a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Massachusetts General (MGH) and McLean Hospitals. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry/Neurology with clinical expertise in Child Psychiatry, Psychopharmacology, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and adults.
Dr. Hammerness has remained an active clinician and educator throughout his career, employed at Massachusetts General Hospital, Newton Wellesley Hospital, and Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Hammerness has been a clinical researcher, with more than 100 peer reviewed publications, and lectures locally, nationally and internationally. He has authored 3 books, on topics of ADHD, brain organization and psychiatric medications for children. His administrative responsibilities and leadership positions have included a range of departmental and institutional efforts to improve the access, quality and safety of mental health care, building strong relationships with primary and specialty care clinicians.
Now, as a member of the Southcoast Health community, Dr. Hammerness will strive to help build services that will fully respond to the mental health needs of our community. His philosophy is that mental health and physical health are inseparable, and that attention to mental health, from early childhood, can lead to improved physical health and quality of life.
Outside of work, Dr. Hammerness enjoys spending time with his family in the great outdoors, during all of the wonderful New England seasons.
