About Brian Edkin

Dr. Edkin completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Miami (Florida) and obtained his medical degree from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio.

He completed his internship in the surgical specialties, followed by his residency in Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.

Dr. Edkin is fellowship trained in joint replacement of the hip and knee, including complex primary and revision joint replacement surgery. He has a special interest in partial knee replacement.

He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.

He joins Southcoast Health from Tennessee Orthopedic Clinics in Knoxville, Tenn., with more than 20 years of experience in non-operative and surgical treatment of adult hip and knee disorders.

  • Excellent care and communication in all respects!

  • Dr. Brian Edkin was phenomenal when he showed up in my room to go up on my surgery. My appointment was at 11:30. I showed up 5 minutes before I had to wait call in and didn't get called in until after 12:45 sat in the room until almost 12:30 before I was seen no one came in said anything and then Dr. Edkin came in and we discussed my surgery again, which is awesome, but no communication before then and you know to have your appointment at 11:30 not get seen until 12:45. Probably not so good.

  • The technician who met me at the door to take my temperature was very kind and the receptionist was wonderful. Dr. Edkin explained my injury completely and in layman terms. Excellent visit.

I saw him as a new patient today, and he was very compassionate, and understanding, and very helpful, and I am a new patient, and I did not understand what was going on with me, and he kind of figured it out, and I've been referred to another doctor, and he was very, very kind, and helpful.

  • He was very informative and met with me for a very long time answering all my questions. He was great. Exceeded my expectations for sure.

  • During this COVID-19 fearful time, I expressed my concern about coming to the office. I was convinced my visit would be safe. My appointment was rescheduled with my permission, but there were too many people there. There were three doctors and many patients. I sat too long in the waiting room. I was afraid to sit down, and waited fifty minutes in an exam room to see the doctor. The nurse and doctor gave excellent care, but I felt unsafe from germs. I was not happy with this waiting period. I was forced to remove the mask I wore into the office for the attendant who was not six feet away to take my temperature. I felt the need to go home immediately put all my clothes in the washing machine and take a shower. Fear of the virus was overwhelming. I received excellent care from providers but the environment made me feel very unsafe.

  • Dr Edkin was very easy to talk to and concerned. He is a good listener and very knowledgeable. I would recommend him.

  • Had an 11:15 am telephone appointment. I called at 12:30 to find out why I hadn’t heard from anyone. The appointment happened quickly after that and Dr Edkin is excellent.

  • Dr.Edkin I feel gave me back my life. 2 hips replaced and I'm 97% to where I was 2 years ago. I could never thank him enough. First hip replaced (left) at 53 yrs okd March 2018 and second hip replaced (right) 54 January 2019. I had replaced and home same day. Never a problem and never in pain again.

  • Dr Edkin listens and explains. No rush.

  • This appointment had to be rescheduled due to an emergency surgery the Doctor had to schedule for this afternoon. This would of been the second time I was moved instead of rescheduling for a different day, they made the appointment for first thing in the morning. I was a little skeptical about the 15 minutes that each patient is given, whether new or returning. However he was very thorough and took his time and still made sure I was out in time for work.

  • my doctor was awesome but my appointment was at 8am. The front desk did not show up until 8:15 and I was not seen until 8:25. It seemed to me that my co-pay was more important then my visit to the doctor at thee front desk. Very disappointing.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and  Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office.  The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
