Charles Hackett, MD, MPH, joins Southcoast VNA as Medical Director of Palliative Care
FAIRHAVEN, Mass. – Southcoast Health announced today that Charles D. Hackett, MD, MPH, has joined Southcoast Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) as Medical Director of Palliative Care.
Dr. Hackett provides leadership to an interdisciplinary team consisting of physicians, specially trained nurses, therapists, social workers, and chaplains, providing medical oversight of all aspects of clinical care being provided to patients. Dr. Hackett works collaborative with Joseph A. Spirito Jr., MD, Medical Director of Palliative Medicine for Southcoast Health, to develop an integrated program of inpatient and outpatient resources. Dr. Hackett treats patients in community and outpatient programs, including Southcoast VNA, hospice and oncology programs. He works with each patient to assess individual goals for care and helps to coordinate advanced care planning.
Prior to joining Southcoast, Dr. Hackett worked in private practice and as a consultant physician at The Royal Victoria Hospital and a staff physician at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Montreal. He came to the U.S. in the late 1990’s to work in medical roles for several corporations including Merck & Co., Raytheon, Home Depot and Coca-Cola. Dr. Hackett completed his professional training in Canada, including a residency at McGill University in Montreal working with Balfour Mount, who is often called the “father of palliative care in North America”.
He earned his doctorate of medicine from the McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
Dr. Hackett is a member of several professional societies including the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care, the Massachusetts Medical Society, the American Academy of Family Medicine and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
