Southcoast Health Celebrates Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. For Southcoast Health, it is also an opportunity to bring attention to the complex issue of health equity.

This February, Southcoast Health committed to educating and broadening awareness about the history, triumphs and struggles of Black and African Americans throughout U.S. history. Join us each year as we learn more about our colleagues and community, while reflecting on our own journeys and perspectives.

Lunch & Learn: The History of Black Hair

On February 22, Southcoast Health employees had the opportunity to join a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council Lunch & Learn via Teams or with their colleagues at several on-site streaming locations.

This session provided insight on the history of hair as an integral part of African society and the integration of African and American cultures, including the impact it had on hair and its assimilation. Discussion also included discrimination of hair expression which lead to the passage of the Crown Act.
