Access to Care Is Key

Southcoast Health CEO Keith A. Hovan on the importance of getting the healthcare we need where we need it

In July, my wife and I sent our daughter to overnight camp for the first time. The camp was in Vermont, and it was hard to process the idea of her being so far away from us. If she got sick or hurt — or just homesick — it would take us several hours to get to her. The thought made for a few sleepless nights.

That experience really brought into focus the importance of access — to our loved ones, to education, food, jobs, housing and other essentials of living. And, access to the healthcare we need when and where we need it. I have some important news to share on this final topic.

We all know how important every minute — every second — can be when someone is badly injured or is suddenly stricken ill.

That is why we are so excited about our work to establish a Level II trauma center at St. Luke’s Hospital. Soon, critically injured patients will be able to receive potentially lifesaving treatment right here in the South Coast community. No longer will they have to endure long ambulance or helicopter transport to Providence or Boston to get the care they need. That potentially lifesaving care will be available right here, close to home, when every second counts. You can read more about the center here.

We have added almost a dozen exceptional healthcare providers to our ranks over the past few months, improving access to both primary and specialty care. You can meet six of them here. They are ready to provide you with the care and service you deserve and expect, when you need it.

It wasn’t long ago that we were hearing about outbreaks of Measles throughout the country. Those reports quieted during the summer months, but with kids back in school we can only wonder if we will hear such news again. Communicable diseases must always be taken seriously. Our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Robert Caldas, explains why here.

You can also read about services we offer to help new moms recovering from potential after effects of pregnancy and childbirth here.

The rest of the articles in the News & Notes section tell you how we are making it easier for you to book appointments with Southcoast providers and the recognition we received for the excellent care we provide every day. These honors provide local, national and world confirmation of the quality of the care we provide right here, exactly where you need it — especially when minutes and seconds count.
