Southcoast Health Wound Care Recognized for Clinical Excellence

Located at Charlton Memorial, St. Luke’s, and Tobey Hospitals, Southcoast Health Wound Care, a member of the Healogics® network, has been serving the community for over 15 years.
This year, in recognition of Wound Care Awareness Week from June 9-13, the program is taking the opportunity to educate patients and caregivers about chronic wounds and the advanced wound care treatment options available in our region.
According to Healogics data, an estimated 7 million Americans are living with a chronic or non-healing wound. These wounds aren’t just surface problems; they are complex medical challenges often complicated by underlying conditions. When wounds don’t heal, they can rapidly progress to dangerous infections that may increase the risk of amputations or even loss of life.
This year, the Southcoast Health Wound Care programs at Charlton Memorial and Tobey Hospitals have been recognized as 2024 Centers of Distinction by Healogics®, having achieved outstanding clinical outcomes for 12 consecutive months, including a patient satisfaction rate higher than 92 percent.
Southcoast Health Wound Care at Charlton Memorial also received the prestigious President’s Circle Award for its clinical and operational excellence, and the Robert A. Warriner III Clinical Excellence Award. This prestigious Clinical Excellence Award recognizes programs that rank in the top 10 percent of eligible Healogics® Wound Care Centers based on the clinical excellence measure, which reflects the comprehensive healing rate weighted by wound mix.
“We are honored to earn this recognition and proud to serve our community with comprehensive and clinically excellent wound care by expert and compassionate providers and clinicians,” said Cheryl Thompson, RN, Market Director for Southcoast Health Wound Care. “These awards recognize our team’s unwavering dedication, innovation, and compassionate care that makes a lasting difference every day.”
Southcoast Health Wound Care is the first comprehensive wound care program in southeastern Massachusetts. This past year they expanded their services to add a new clinical program called secondary prevention. This program addresses those patients with certain chronic wounds that often experience a recurrence rate of 50-70 percent. It is thoughtfully designed to lower the incidence of recurrence, as well as provide individualized treatment earlier in the wound life cycle, to achieve higher healing rates in shorter healing time.
Advanced wound care modalities provided by Southcoast Health wound care experts include negative pressure wound therapy, total contact casting, compression therapy, bio-engineered tissues, and biosynthetic dressings. Southcoast Health Wound Care also offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy, an innovation treatment option that surrounds the patient with 100 percent oxygen to promote faster healing.
