Radiology is open 24/7, just like the Emergency Department, because almost everyone who comes through the ER needs some kind of X-ray or CT scan — sometimes dozens.

My goal is to do the best, safest exam possible and try to make patients feel comfortable. I shake everybody's hand — it's my way of showing respect and courtesy.

And I've learned to speak what I call "occupational Portuguese" so I can help patients move into the right position. And I started noticing that a lot of older people seemed uncomfortable and chilled, so now I ask, "Tem frio?" And if they nod yes, I wrap a warmed blanket around them. You can see the tension and nervousness goes right out of their faces — they love it.

It's a little thing, a blanket, but it makes them feel a lot better about their experience here. They don't teach you that in school.
