I remember breaking my arm when I was nine. My mother had to knock on the door of the hospital that night because it was locked. Can you imagine?

When I started working in the Emergency Department 25 years ago, Emergency Medicine was in its infancy. Today, it's a specialty. Our doctors have years of experience in Emergency Medicine — they know how to deal with whatever comes through the door.

Physicians in the community rely on us being here 24/7 and trust us to provide expert care for their patients. Advances in technology let us do what used to be a six-day workup of tests in just hours — radiology, CT scans, blood tests, cardiograms, whatever the patient needs.

Getting care quickly can be critical, especially in the treatment of heart attacks and trauma. ER medicine has come a long way — and we're saving more lives.
