A New Emergency Department

The St. Luke's Emergency Department was built to treat 55,000 patients annually. Yet we're now serving some 73,000 patients a year — and demand is growing.

You tell us St. Luke's provides great care, but you want it faster.

If you need hospitalization, there's a better than 50/50 chance you'll be treated in the ED first. And because we're here 24/7, people use us 24/7 — often because they cannot get in to see their own doctor.

The New Bedford region has only one source for around-the-clock emergency care: St. Luke's. We don't keep office hours. We operate every hour of every day of the year.

The New Emergency Department

    Room to Move
Floor space in the new Emergency Department is 80 percent larger.

    New Bays
51 totally new emergency bays — all of them private with solid walls.

    ExpressCare 24
A new ExpressCare 24 "fast lane" option for minor complaints will speed many visitors through the ED in about an hour.

    Keeping Tabs
GPS-type tracking system continuously pinpoints patients' locations and conditions and patients' vital signs are monitored wirelessly.

    A Quieter ED
Staff are voice- and data-linked to each other, eliminating the need for an intercom.

    Family Oriented
The new ED includes a dedicated area where families can meet in privacy.

    Crisis Ready
Two new negative-pressure decontamination rooms for patients with contagious diseases.

    Secure
A new psychiatric observation area with secure, state-of-the-art equipment and monitoring.

    Built for the future
New ED will easily accommodate 100,000 annual visits.
