Trying to follow Meg Kashner is like tracking a blur of competitive action - soccer kicks, charging hoop layups, softballs dug out of flying dirt. At many points in her life, Kashner has competed in several sports at the same time - all with great success.
In her four years at Wareham High School, Kashner was a regional all-star in soccer, basketball and softball, earning varsity letters in each sport during her freshman year. As a senior, she received the regional New Bedford Standard-Times leadership award as a student-athlete and was also nominated for the coveted Dave Cowens Award for basketball.
Her athletic career continued at Providence College, where she was a member of the Friars' Division 1 women's soccer team, retiring her cleats after her junior season to focus on her studies and student teaching during her upcoming senior year. She has also continued with basketball and her intramural team at PC won the campus championship last year. When she finished her studies this year, she returned home to Wareham and pitched in with some coaching assistance for the Wareham High jayvee softball team.
Her goals:
-
Kashner aspires to complete a degree in special needs education and work with children with disabilities.
-
During her college soccer career, Kashner was plagued by bone spurs on her heel, making it difficult to keep up with the intensive practice schedule and punishing running that is part of NCAA Division 1 soccer. She underwent bone surgery with orthopedic surgeons at Tobey Hospital and then did rehab with therapists at Southcoast Rehab. She was back in the game for her junior season - finally pain free.
On sport:
-
"I've done some kind of sport all my life and I'm always learning new sports. Sports have been my structure - in high school and college I've known I have some sort of practice or game almost every day.
"Sports have helped to shape my character - whether it's learning leadership skills as a team captain, time management through having to fit everything in or just feeling connected through your teammates to something bigger than just yourself.
"Sports have given me confidence as a person. I always see them being part of my life in some way."
