Heat Emergencies
Most people enjoy the sunshine and warm temperatures of summer days, but too much heat can affect anyone. In the event of a heat emergency, would you know what to do?
Heat Cramps

The symptoms of heat cramps include painful spasms of large muscle groups after physical activity in the sun.
- Move the person to a cooler location and place them in a comfortable position.
- Begin to gently stretch the affected muscle and replenish fluids (water is best„avoid anything with alcohol or caffeine in it).
- Give 1/2 glass of cool water every 15 minutes.
Heat Exhaustion

Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, intense thirst, and profuse sweating.
- Move the person to a cooler location.
- Remove or loosen tight clothing and apply cool, wet cloths.
- If the person is conscious, give cool water to drink, making sure the person sips the water slowly. (Avoid fluids containing alcohol or caffeine.)
- Let the person rest, and watch for changes.
Heat Stroke

Symptoms include hot, dry skin, confusion, and disorientation.
- Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Help is needed fast. Call 911 or your local emergency number.
- Move the person to a cooler location.
- Quickly cool the body„immerse the person in a cool bath if possible, or wrap wet sheets around the body and fan it.
- Watch for breathing problems, keep the person lying down, and cool the body until help arrives.
