Sports & Nutrition

  • Athletes need good nutrition, including a diet high in complex carbohydrates, with lots of grains, fruits and vegetables. Diets need to include essential proteins and fats. An athlete's diet should not be fat-free.

  • Special attention should be paid to the nutritional needs of the endurance athlete. Proper hydration is extremely important. Muscles become less elastic with dehydration and don't function well. Athletes should rehydrate at least every 15 to 20 minutes, for about four (4) minutes. If you wait until you're thirsty, it's too late.

  • Provide fluids on the sidelines throughout the game. Athletes should be encouraged to come to the sidelines or touch line, where they can replenish fluids without penalty.

  • Water is the best fluid during an activity because it is absorbed very quickly. Sports drinks with electrolytes are good both before and after an activity. When you are gearing up for a sports event, a sports drink is a good idea the night before or several hours before the event.
