About the Southcoast Center for Women's Health

The Center for Women's Health was established by the Southcoast Hospitals Group in January of 1997. Presently, the center performs mammography exams, ultrasounds, and general x-ray. Women, men, and children are seen at the Center. There is a separate entrance and waiting area for men and children.

There are four mammography units at the center - three of which are technologically advanced Lorad units that were manufactured in December of 1996. The Center performs both screening and diagnostic mammography exams. A patient who comes to the center for a routine screening mammogram can call the center 24 hours after her exam to obtain her results. A letter will also be sent to the patient within a one week time period.

If a patient comes to the center as a diagnostic patient (has a lump, pain, tenderness, history of breast cancer), the mammography films will be read by the radiologist while the patient is still at the center. The radiologists confer with all diagnostic patients to discuss the results of the exam. If additional testing needs to be performed (either more mammography films or ultrasound), the testing will be done during the same visit. If it is then determined that an ultrasound-guided biopsy or cyst aspiration needs to be completed, that procedure will also be performed. The pathology results are usually available within two days. Needle localizations and stereotactic procedures are performed at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, part of Southcoast Hospitals Group.
