Tobey Hospital, a not-for-profit institution, is the Greater Wareham area's major health care resource. A community hospital that opened its doors in 1940, Tobey has grown in size and services and today offers area residents expanded medical specialties, state-of-the-art technology and personalized patient care close to home.
At Tobey, patients have access to sophisticated diagnostic testing, including CT (computerized tomography) scanning, nuclear cardiology, a pulmonary function laboratory, vascular surgery, advanced cardiac studies and pacemaker implants and a fully-accredited mammography suite.
The hospital's 24-hour emergency room is staffed full time by physicians who have specialized training in emergency medicine. Tobey's medical staff includes specialists in oncology, cardiology, rheumatology, endocrinology, orthopedics, vascular surgery and others. Patients no longer have to travel long distances for these services. Tobey's Makepeace Center for Women & Families has earned an outstanding reputation as a regional provider of obstetrical care.
In 2004 Tobey opens a new state-of-the-art surgical wing, which includes a new Intensive Care Unit, that makes today's advanced medical procedures available to area residents.
As part of Southcoast Hospitals Group, Tobey offers a wide range of free, community health education and wellness programs, which includes a mobile health van.
Tobey was founded in 1938 through a gift from the Alice Tobey Jones estate.
