Charlton Memorial Hospital, a not-for-profit institution, provides a full range of inpatient services, including the only hospital in the South Coast region to offer open heart surgery and elective coronary angioplasty.
In addition to inpatient services, Charlton provides a comprehensive mix of rehabilitative services and outpatient therapies. Charlton also provides diagnostic services at the main campus and throughout neighboring communities in physician's offices and other off-site locations. Charlton features a new wing that includes state-of-the-art surgical suites, a newly renovated obstetrics/gynecology unit and a refurbished lobby.
Charlton has 362 total beds in service, including 37 bassinets and a Level II nursery. The hospital was founded in 1885 as the Fall River Hospital and later became Union Hospital and merged with Truesdale Hospital. Charlton merged with St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham in 1996 to form Southcoast Health System, which now has dozens of ancillary facilities throughout the region, including an assisted living facility, home health care and hospice, a wellness center and numerous outpatient medical services.
As part of Southcoast Hospitals Group, Charlton offers a wide range of free community health education and wellness programs, which includes a mobile health van.
