If there is an "essence" to the quality of nursing care at Southcoast and the nurses behind that care, it can be summed up in three words: caring, teaching, loving.

The nurses of Southcoast Health System — from those who work in the three hospitals to those in the clinics to those who visit patients in their homes — have come together in this online feature that provides a glimpse into what makes nurses a special and indispensable part of the health continuum.

It's the commitment to quality — and ultimately to the patient — that is celebrated in "The Essence of Nursing."

In their own words — and through candid images — the nurses of Southcoast tell a story of commitment, compassion and camaraderie.

Theirs is a story of lifelong dedication to human interaction, healing and learning. Southcoast simply provides the venue, the tools and the support to fulfill the dreams that, for many nurses, began in childhood and were molded by personal or family experiences.

Even in the frenetic pace of the OR, nurses find the time to make sure their patients know they are special.

Their stories will educate, enlighten and inspire — and make you want to say, "thank you," every time you pass a nurse in the hallway.
