Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care to host Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil on November 14

Vigil being held nationwide to honor lung cancer survivors, caregivers; and remember those who have passed; special guest Steve Nelson, former Patriots linebacker

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. - Southcoast® Centers for Cancer Care Fairhaven site will host a local vigil as part of a global campaign to raise awareness about lung cancer and reduce the stigma associated with the disease. On November 14, Southcoast will join 125 communities across the country in hosting a Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil in partnership with Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA).

Lung cancer patients, survivors, family members, caregivers and the community are invited to join Southcoast for this very special event held at the only site south of Boston and the only site in the Rhode Island area.

The vigil will take place at Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care, 206 Mill Road in Fairhaven. The event will begin at 6 p.m. During the first hour, resource tables will be available to guests, providing educational material about lung cancer, lung cancer screenings, and lung cancer support groups.

The speaking program will begin at 7 p.m. and will be led by Master of Ceremonies, J.R. Reitz, morning show host and program director for FUN 107. The speaking program will include personal stories from local caregivers and survivors; lung cancer experts, Richard Miller, MD, Physician-in-Chief of the Surgical Care Center at Southcoast; and Therese M. Mulvey, MD, Medical Oncologist and Physician-in-Chief for Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care. The event will also feature special guest Steve Nelson, former New England Patriots linebacker. At the end of the speaking program, the exterior of the cancer center will be lit in purple lights and guests will illuminate glow sticks in honor of survivors and caregivers and in memory of those who have passed.

The adult smoking rate in the South Coast region is approximately 67 percent higher than the state average. A history of smoking is the main risk factor for developing lung cancer. Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. The mortality rate from lung cancer is 16 percent higher in the South Coast region than the state average. Today, there is a lifesaving benefit for those at high risk to detect lung cancer early through low dose computerized tomography (CT) screening.

This free event is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is required. Guests can register for the event by visiting and clicking on “Sign Up Now”.
