Southcoast Rehabilitation Services offers free balance screenings in Fall River and Dartmouth during the month of September
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - Southcoast® Rehabilitation Services, part of Southcoast Health System, joins the Massachusetts Falls Prevention Coalition in its sixth annual "Stand Together to Prevent Falls" event this September by offering free balance screenings to the community.
Falls are the leading cause of injury or death among older Americans. Studies suggest that one in three Americans age 65 and older will suffer a fall each year. These falls often result in injuries that may threaten a person’s independence and quality of life. In addition to injury, fear of falling may cause a person to limit their social activities which can result in depression from physical decline, social isolation, and feelings of helplessness.
Between Monday, September 23, and Friday, September 27, physical therapists from Southcoast Rehabilitation Services will offer free 30 minute balance screenings and fall prevention education. Screenings will be available at Southcoast Rehabilitation Services at Durfee Union, 289 Pleasant Street in Fall River, and at the Southcoast Brain and Spine Center, 480 Hawthorn Street in Dartmouth. Screenings are open to the public. Pre-registration is required, as space is limited. To reserve a free balance screening, call Sue Caron at 508-324-3209.
