Auxiliary of St. Luke’s Hospital announces 2013-2014 scholarship winners

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The Auxiliary of St. Luke’s Hospital recently announced $4,000 in scholarship awards for individuals who are pursuing a career in health care.

The Auxiliary presented four $1,000 scholarship awards to area high school seniors during its annual Scholarship Luncheon held June 7, at the Hawthorne Country Club in Dartmouth. The awards were presented b Shauneen Crane, Scholarship Chair for the Auxiliary of St. Luke’s Hospital.

This year, two of the four scholarships were presented by Michael Bachstein, Vice President of Support Services for Southcoast Health System, in memory of his mother, Tamara Bachstein.

The 2013-2014 Scholarship winners are:

  • Nikola Backiel, a graduate of New Bedford High School, who will attend the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy to pursue a degree in pre-medical studies.
  • Katia Domingos, who received the Tamara Bachstein Scholarship, is a graduate of New Bedford High School and will attend Tufts University to pursue a degree in pre-medical studies.
  • Casey Lopes, who received the Tamara Bachstein Scholarship, is a graduate of Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School and will attend Husson University to pursue a degree in nursing.
  • Annie McGregor, a graduate of Fairhaven High School, who will attend University of New England to pursue a degree in pre-medical studies.

The Auxiliary of St. Luke’s Hospital is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to render service to St. Luke’s Hospital, its tax-exempt subsidiaries, its patients and to assist in promoting the health and welfare of the community. Joining the Auxiliary is a great way to become involved in your community hospital. Members serve as ambassadors to the community on behalf of the hospital.
