Grape Street Orthopedic joins Southcoast Physicians Group
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Grape Street Orthopedic announced today it has joined Southcoast™ Physicians Group, one of the largest networks of primary and specialty care physicians in the region, and part of Southcoast Health System. The orthopedic practice includes Harry Von Ertfelda, MD, and Gilbert L. Shapiro, MD, FACS.
As part of its merger into Southcoast Physicians Group, Grape Street Orthopedic will now be recognized as Southcoast Physicians Group Orthopedics. The transition to Southcoast Physicians Group will be seamless for patients, requiring no action on their part.
This practice offers over 40 years of experience by two highly trained, board certified orthopedic physicians to the New Bedford community. Southcoast Physicians Group Orthopedics treats a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis; back pain; sprains and strains; fractures; work injuries; and auto accident and liability injuries. They offer an injection series for advanced arthritis of the knees and provide surgical referrals.

About Southcoast Physicians Group Orthopedics
Harry Von Ertfelda, MD, is a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington and served an internship at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City. Dr. Von Ertfelda completed his orthopedic residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, Dartmouth affiliated hospitals in New Hampshire and at the University of Rochester Medical School in Rochester, N.Y. He has been practicing orthopedic surgery in New Bedford since 1970.
Dr. Von Ertfelda is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society, the Bristol South Medical Society, the Clinical Orthopaedic Society and other organizations.
Gilbert L. Shapiro, MD, FACS, earned his medical degree from Tufts University in Boston. After which he completed a surgical internship at the New England Medical Center in Boston and went on to complete a residency in orthopedic surgery at the Lahey Clinic and Boston City Hospital.
Dr. Shapiro has practiced orthopedics in the South Coast region for many years. He has traveled the world volunteering his services as a physician with Project Hope and Orthopedic Overseas. Dr. Shapiro is a current and former member of many local civic organizations and served as chairman of Southcoast Health System from 2005 to 2008.
Dr. Shapiro is board certified in orthopedic surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and several medical societies including the Massachusetts Medical Society. Dr. Shapiro also served as past president of the New England Orthopedic Society.
