Southcoast Blood Bank says Thank You to 2013 Blood Bank Challenge Participants

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The Southcoast™ Blood Bank at St. Luke's Hospital would like to express thanks to Mechanics Cooperative Bank, Rau-Dumont-Audet (RDA) Insurance Inc., BayCoast Bank and Partners Insurance Inc. for their tremendous donation of 298 pints of blood collected at the 2013 "Blood Bank Challenge."

The "Blood Bank Challenge" began three years ago when Joseph T. Baptista Jr., President & CEO of Mechanics Cooperative Bank, and Jason Rua, President of RDA Insurance, teamed up to create a friendly competitive community blood drive that would serve to support the Southcoast Blood Bank, the region's only local blood donor program. The purpose of the challenge is to encourage employees and neighboring businesses to donate blood for the sake of their community.

This year's competition expanded with the addition of BayCoast Bank and Partners Insurance, who teamed up against Mechanics Cooperative Bank and RDA Insurance Inc. to conclude which team could collect the most pints of blood over a two-day blood drive, and thus who would help save the most lives.

The winning team, Mechanics Cooperative Bank and RDA Insurance, collected a remarkable 172 pints and had 204 attendees. The BayCoast Bank and Partners Insurance collected an outstanding 126 pints and had 171 people attend the drive. As per contest rules, the winning team selected the Fall River Fire Department as recipients of a $2,500 charitable donation from BayCoast Bank and Partners Insurance. This donation will be used to benefit a program to purchase defibrillators for all fire engines in the city of Fall River.

The Southcoast Blood Bank is honored to acknowledge all who participated in the 2013 Blood Bank Challenge for their hard work and donations that will serve to save the lives of friends, neighbors and members of the South Coast community.
